Why do we use the word cult? Is it demeaning? No, the word “cult” is a technical theological term. Robert Bowman defines a cult theologically as “A religious group originating as a heretical sect and maintaining fervent commitment to heresy.” Adj.: “cultic” (may be used with reference to tendencies as well as full cult status). Source: Robert Bowman, A Biblical Guide To Orthodoxy And Heresy.
Are all cults destructive sociologically? No, not necessarily. Please note that the inclusion of materials about a particular group on this web site and our publications does not necessarily mean that the group is considered a destructive cult.

What should I do if I am part of a group on this chart, but don’t agree with their teachings?

  • Get educated about Christianity. Here are some handy places to start. Essential Doctrine Made Easy – handy 14-page guide to the key beliefs and their biblical basis (or download here);Christianity, Cults & Religions– see above or download here; Jesus (Rose Bible Basics series) – easy-to-understand guide to the basic biblical teachings by and about Jesus.
  • Begin looking for wise Christians who can answer your questions.
  • Ask around to find a good Bible teaching, Christ-centered church.
  • Read the Bible one book at a time. Read Galatians, James, Romans or Hebrews for example. Don’t read a verse here and a verse there and jump from book to book. People don’t read the great works of literature that way, and the Bible should not be read that way either. Many cultic groups combine verses from different books of the Bible to create a meaning that is clearly not there. Use your common sense.

I’m afraid to leave my cultic group. Is there life outside?
Yes, there is life outside. Some cultic groups might try to convince you that terrible things will happen if you leave, but many people report the opposite:

  • Freedom from fear and guilt.
  • No more looking back and wondering who in your group is watching you.
  • A sense of personal integrity
  • Grace and forgiveness
  • Deep joy and peace
  • Peace with God, knowing that his love is not based on our deserving or earning it.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God; not of works, that no one should boast.” Eph. 2:8,9
