In the Old Testament, God asked Noah to build an enormous ark to hold living creatures and his family during a massive flood. This illustrated and foreshadowed the Ark of the Covenant, the coming of Jesus, as well as God’s desire that we dwell within him.
Starting July 7, Ken Ham, president of apologetics ministry Answers in Genesis (AiG) will be inviting guests to take a walk into their enormous to-scale ark in Williamstown, Kentucky.
Currently under construction, the 800-acre attraction is called “Ark Encounter” and is being built according to the cubit measurements given in the Book of Genesis. The ark, when completed, is said to be the largest timber-framed structure in the United States. Model animals are will be placed to fit into the confines of the Ark to demonstrate how Noah might have been able to fit every “kind” of animal on the Earth into the massive structure.
Ark Encounter, which has been often referred to as a “park” will be accompanied by a restaurant, theater, and petting zoo for visitors. AiG is also known for its Creation Museum, a mere 40 miles away, just outside Cincinnati.
Some controversy has surrounded the attraction, especially regarding the source of funds used to build the park: projected to cost $91 million, Ark Encounter was awarded tax incentives in 2014. The incentives were revoked later that year when AiG claimed they were hiring based on a detailed statement of faith: it was reported that even Christians whose beliefs didn’t line up with creationist ideology were turned away. AiG returned with a lawsuit in 2015 and the incentives were reinstated. Needless to say, this has left a lot of Kentucky taxpayers upset.
AiG has more plans for the 800-acres than just an Ark however. Future attractions include a Tower of Babel, a first-century Middle Eastern village, and an experience following the Bible from Abraham to the parting of the Red Sea.
