Third Day of Christmas: 3 Days in the Tomb Before Jesus’ Resurrection

Jesus could have risen the day after Good Friday instead of waiting till Sunday. He could have also risen on Monday, perhaps benefiting some of us working people with an added holiday! Why did God ordain for Jesus to spend 3 days in the tomb? Well, there’s a very specific reason. Let’s dig into it!

“He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you… ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'”–Luke 24:6-7 (Also John 20; Acts 1:3; 2:32; 13:34-37; 2 Tim. 2:8)

So why three days? According to Jewish tradition (Genesis Kabbah 100:7) a person’s soul hovers over the body three days after death. The Jews in the first century would have accepted that Jesus’ soul did not descend to Sheol until the third day. It would seem God intentionally planned a 3rd-day resurrection to show that death really had been beaten!
