How to Address Suffering In Your Bible Study

5suffering
Part of my job as a blogger involves keeping up with world events. Last week newsreaders across the globe were learning about the 100 year mark since the Armenian genocide. Researching the details of the horrific 7.8 magnitude quake this weekend led me to a dialogue with God: “Where are you in these events? And what truths can I share with our readers on Monday?”
It’s times like this when more solace can be brought about with discussions than flawed human answers, so we’ve put together some questions for you and your Bible study/small group/family. The beauty of discussion is that it draws communities closer together, and when the discussion is biblically-based, hearts can truly be knit together to allow Christ’s work in our lives in joy and in devastation. This week when you get your small group together or you have your family around the dinner table, bring these questions up:

Reflection

  1. Why are we naturally not inclined to trust God in the midst of hardships?
  2. When it comes to affliction and disaster, in what ways has God already proved his trustworthiness to His beloved ones?
  3. How has your recent attitude toward pain and problems impacted others?
  4. Colossians 1:24 speaks about responding well to hardship “for the sake of… the church.” How strong is your sense of responsibility to believers?
  5. Take a moment to pray for the rescue crews and those affected by the earthquake. What current atrocities/situations do you feel the Holy Spirit is leading you to pray for? Write them down to commit them to daily prayer.
