What do Americans really think about the Bible?

BU-040814-web-thumbAs someone who teaches others how to study the Bible, you may find these recent Bible trends both encouraging (88% of Americans own a Bible) and not-so-encouraging (Just 26% read their Bible on a daily basis). Here are some fascinating Bible statistics on American attitudes and habits on the the best-selling book of all time.
Highlights of the “State of the Bible” poll:
How many Americans own a Bible?

  • 88% own a Bible
  • On average, an American household owns 4 Bibles
  • 79% think the Bible is sacred
  • 61% wish they read the Bible more

How many American read it?

  • The majority of people who read their Bible—53% read their Bible four times a year or less
  • 26% of Americans said they read their Bible on a regular basis (4 or more times a week)
  • Americans spend 30 minutes reading the Bible in one sitting
  • Elders are the most avid readers of the Bible (24%)

Why aren’t they reading it?

  • 47%–Busyness
  • 8%-Difficult to understand
  • 6%-Never finding the story or verse they’re looking for

How many are using online Bible resources?

  • 35%–Use their smartphone to look up Bible verses or content
  • 24%-Use an e-reader such as Kindle or iPad to read Bible content (compared with 17% in 2013)
  • 55%–Use the Internet to find Bible content (up from 3% from 2013)
