Are We Living by the Wrong Values?

In the past 90 days I’ve had conversations with six people — most of them strangers at airports — about the meaning of life.  This doesn’t normally happen to me. I don’t think it has happened in many years. But right now a lot of people are questioning their values and direction in life.
How do you define success? To have money? A retirement account? A job? A beautiful wife? A family? A significant other?
Next question, have you reached success yet? Do you have enough?
If you’re over age 40, you’ve probably seen some hurt in life. You’ve seen some dreams die. You’ve watched carefully laid plans go up in smoke. The rug has been ripped out from under you. You’ve been dragged on your face through the dirt. The husband or wife has left. The child grew up to be a drug addict. The secure job got downsized. The nest egg has dwindled. The loving arms are indifferent. You look at the future and you see no hope for improvement in the most important areas in life. You’re trapped.
Some people are facing reality for the first time: life is hard and it doesn’t go as we expect.
When we are ripped to shreds we can come to God.
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
When we have lost a love…
Blessed are they that mourn: for they will be comforted.
When we’ve been betrayed by someone we trust…
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
God knows what to do with broken hearts and damaged lives. Now is the time to admit that we can no more control every aspect of life any more than we can control earthquakes, volcanoes, and tornadoes. We bring the devastation done by others and by ourselves and lay them at the feet of Jesus. From there we surrender. Then the adventure begins and the life is pulled apart and put back together in joy and peace. With new meaning and hope and purpose.
