Finding Calm Amidst the Coronavirus Chaos–A Short Devotional for Focusing on God’s Names

City-wide shutdowns. Panic buying. And lots of handwashing.

Most of us all over the world are going through the same motions. Fear is in the air, but in moments of clear thinking, we realize that panic is never the answer to the problems we face…

Panic causes us to become selfish and hoard supplies that the less fortunate need. On the other hand, lack of wisdom and foolishness causes us to ignore practical precautions like hand washing or physical distancing, putting the lives of others at risk.

In trying times, sober, rational, and informed thinking and prayer are what will help us limit the damage that is done to our society and our souls. This week, we wanted to share a short devotional to help bring peace and the knowledge of God to you, wherever you are…

What’s in a Name? Jehovah-Sabaoth

Pronounced: juh-HO-vah sah-bah-OATH. Also known as YHWH-Sabaoth. Many English versions of the Bible translate Sabaoth as Almighty. “Jehovah-Sabaoth” is often translated as The Lord Almighty. Sabaoth is also translated as Heavenly Hosts or Armies.

References:

  • 1 Samuel 1:3; 17:45;
  • Psalm 46:7;
  • Malachi 1:10-14
  • (Romans 9:29)

Devotional & Application

Throughout Scripture, God’s people would call on Jehovah-Sabaoth in times of despair.

Some examples occur in 1 Samuel. Read the following passages and see how the Lord of Hosts (Armies) helped Hannah and David in their time of great distress and need.

  • 1 Samuel 1:1-20
  • 1 Samuel 17:41-47

At times, things seem so overwhelming that we find ourselves in complete despair. Despair can be caused by financial, emotional, spiritual, or physical hardships. The Bible promises us that if we approach God with a righteous heart (Proverbs 18:10), He will deliver us from out of the midst of our troubles, just like He delivered Hannah and David. On a sheet of paper, or in your personal journal, spend several minutes reflecting and journaling on those times when Jehovah-Sabaoth delivered you from trouble and call on Him for help in your current need.
