13 Fulfillments of Genesis in the Book of Revelation

God’s holiness means he will deal fully and finally with sin and its corrupting effects. God’s grace and mercy (demonstrated in Jesus) mean that sinners can be forgiven. God’s goodness means our future is one of joy and peace, not fear. God’s power and sovereignty mean that he will restore all things. Jesus’ resurrection is our sure hope. The risen Jesus gives eternal life to all who trust him. All the great themes of the Bible point forward to this one: a sure and certain future. He is “making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5).
At the beginning of the Bible, we see the ruin caused by sin. At the end of the Bible, we see the restoration of all things brought about by God, in Christ. Note the beautiful contrast and fullness of God’s salvation.

Genesis

Revelation

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (1:1). There is “a new heaven and a new earth” (21:1).
“God made two great lights” (1:16). “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it
light, and the Lamb [Jesus Christ] is its lamp” (21:23).
“When you eat from [the tree of the knowledge of good and evil] you will certainly die” (2:17). “There will be no more death” (21:4).
Satan appears and deceives (3:1). The devil disappears forever (20:10).
Sin enters the original paradise—that is, Eden (3:6–7). “Nothing impure will ever enter it” (21:27).
Humanity’s face-to-face relationship with God is broken (3:8–10). “God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them” (21:3).
Satan temporarily triumphs (3:13). Christ, the Lamb, reigns victorious forever
(22:3).
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe” (3:16). “There will be no more . . . mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed
away” (21:4).
The earth is cursed (3:17). “No longer will there be any curse” (22:3).
Humankind’s dominion over the earth is compromised due to Adam and Eve’s sin (3:19). God’s people—those who trust in him—“will reign for ever and ever” (22:5).
“The LORD God banished him from the Garden . . . [and] drove the man out” (3:23–24). “On no day will [the heavenly city’s] gates ever be shut” (21:25).
The tree of life is guarded by angels called cherubim (3:24). The tree of life is made accessible to God’s people (22:2, 14).
Humans are driven from God’s presence (3:23–24). “They will see his face” (22:4).
