5 Names of God for Overcoming Loneliness

4082xThis time of year can be tough for a lot of us… whether you’ve experienced the loss of a loved one or are going through heartache from separation, loneliness is not an uncommon nor abnormal feeling. God created us with a need for community and a need to be known.
Let me share 5 Names of God that you can reflect on; this is not an exhaustive list and there are so many more qualities of God that can help you find comfort. As you take time to pray through these names and let them become part of your understanding of God, I hope you can overcome the pain of loneliness to find the unshakable hope, purpose — and even joy — you have in Christ.

1. El Roi: The God Who Sees Me

“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’”–GENESIS 16:13

Do you feel like you’re alone, that nobody really sees (much less understands) the troubles you face? Maybe you feel like injustice
is rampant in your life. Even in such dark times, trust that God is El Roi. He sees—and He sees you. He looks intently. He notices. He studies everything and misses nothing. Others may overlook you or forget you, but God never will. And because He sees you, He knows what you need and gladly provides the comfort you are looking for.
Do you see the God who is watching you?

2. El Racham: the Compassionate God

“And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.’”–EXODUS 34:6

He’s a God of care and kindness. He remembers. He’s empathetic and tender. He hurts when those He loves are hurting. But divine compassion doesn’t just stop with concern. God doesn’t just feel badly for those in trouble. He’s protective. He swings into action to defend His own.
We are best able to show compassion when we have first been on the receiving end of divine compassion. In what ways have you experienced the compassion of God? How can you offer it to others?

3. Rum Rosh: The One Who Lifts My Head

Where Is God in Trials?“But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.”–Psalm 3:3

To be human in this broken world is to suffer pain, loss, and hardship. As we read in Job: “Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward” (5:7). While pain is real, so is the comfort and help God gives. God tenderly lifts our heads, looks in our eyes, exalts us, and lets us know we are not alone.

4. Lo Shanah: Unchanging

“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.”–MALACHI 3:6

We grow taller (and then wider). Our hair turns gray (or falls out). Our athletic abilities and mental faculties slip away. Those six-pack abs morph into a spare tire. We get wrinkles. Our teeth fall out. Even our most treasured relationships change. Best friends get transferred. Our kids grow up and move away.
The fact remains that everything changes—everything except for God. Only God is unchanging. God does not rebrand. He does not evolve. He does not grow old and fall apart. He does not move away. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. And when everything in our lives is so unstable, it gives us great comfort to know that God won’t change. He is the same today as He was at creation. What security that provides!

5. Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord Who Heals

“He said, ‘If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.’”–EXODUS 15:26

God created us in His own image, which means that He gave each of us a mind, a will, and emotions, and He enabled us to have relationships. We are complex beings, and our brokenness due to sin is complex as well. Sometimes our deepest hurts cannot be seen on an X-ray or through the results of a blood test. If you’ve wallowed in guilt and shame, felt the heartbreak of a broken relationship, agonized over a wayward family member, felt grief over a lost loved one, or been disappointed by an unfulfilled dream, you know that spiritual, emotional, and relational hurts can sometimes be more painful than physical maladies.
Today, when God heals—a broken bone, a broken heart, a broken relationship—He is giving us a foretaste of what is to come. God is Jehovah-Rapha, our healer. God alone saves from spiritual death. He only can give eternal life.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for caring about every part of me. You desire that I find healing—physically, emotionally, and most of all, spiritually. Thank You for providing me with a way to be healed of my sin. Amen.
