Eleventh Day of Christmas: 11 Curtains (of Goat Hair) of the Tabernacle

“You shall also make curtains of goats’ hair, to be a tent over the tabernacle. You shall make eleven curtains. The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; and the eleven curtains shall all have the same measurements.–Exodus 26:7-8

The Coverings of the Tabernacle

Just as a fence surrounded the courtyard to protect those outside of the Tabernacle, a tent protected the Tabernacle itself. The instructions for making the tent were very precise in Exodus 26.
Four layers of different materials covered the tent from the inside to the outside. These materials were:

  1. Linen of the finest quality.
  2. Goat’s hair covering.
  3. Ram skin covering dyed red.
  4. Badger, porpoise, or sea cow skin covering. The Hebrew word tahash is very difficult to translate. Most scholars agree that it refers to the skin of some type of aquatic animal. As the outer layer, the leather skin protected the Tabernacle tent from rain or morning dew.
