Week of Prayer: Why Pray? + FREE Prayer Guide

Day 2: Why Pray?

“Prayer should not be regarded ‘as a duty which must be performed, but rather as a privilege to be enjoyed, a rare delight that is always revealing some new beauty.'”–E.M. Bounds

God is omnipotent, sovereign, and has got it all under control. So why should we even bother praying? Here are the 3 reasons the Bible gives us…

1. Prayer is Important

God’s Word instructs us to make prayer a high priority. God wants to hear from his children.

Devote yourselves to prayer.–Col. 4:2
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.–Tim. 2:1

2. Prayer Draws Us Close to God

814

In prayer, we worship, confess our sins, bring our requests to God, and wait and listen for him to speak. In short, we enter deeply and directly into relationship with God. Through communion with God, our hearts and minds will be changed to be more like our Lord, and we will grow to know his perfect will for our lives.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing, and perfect will.–Rom. 12:2
So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord–who is Spirit–makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image–2 Cor. 3:18

3. Prayer is Powerful

God not only hears our prayers, but he is acting on them. Our prayer requests bring about real change in the world and in the lives of the people we pray for.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.–Matt. 7:7-8
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer–Matt. 21:22 (Mark 11:24; John 15:7, 16)
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well… The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.–James 5:15-16
