Biblical Ways to Manage Your Money

financial_lit
Did you know that April is Financial Literacy Month? This week, let’s look at how we can apply that to our lives as Christians.
When we think about how to view money through the lens of the Bible, Proverbs is always a great place to start. Also known as one of the Wisdom books of the Bible, Proverbs was written to persuade and instruct God’s people to pursue wisdom and godly living. Think of it like the original self help book — except Proverbs is timeless and divinely inspired compared to the modern versions of today!

15 Key Bible Verses About Money

  1.  Avoid bribes of all sorts

A greedy man brings trouble to his family, but he who hates bribes will live.–Proverbs 15:27

  2. Stay out of and pay off all debts. Do not borrow what you can’t pay off.

Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.–Proverbs 22:26-27

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender–Proverbs 22:7

  3. Work when it is time to work, and be disciplined.

Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.–Proverbs 10:4-5

  4. Be wary of coveting what is not yours.

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.–Proverbs 14:30

  5. Stay away from fraudulent schemes and business partners

Food gained by fraud tastes sweet to a man, but he ends up with a mouth full of gravel.–Proverbs 20:17

  6. Be generous.

He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward him for what he has done.–Proverbs 19:17

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.–Proverbs 22:9

  7. Be mindful and tactful with your resources, but do not hoard your possessions.

People curse the man who hoards grain, but blessing crowns him who is willing to sell.–Proverbs 11:26

  8. Do business with honor.

The wicked man earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.–Proverbs 11:18

A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare.–Proverbs 21:6

  9. Earn and manage your money in moderation.

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.–Proverbs 23:4

  10. Use smart saving tactics and avoid get-rich-quick schemes.

Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.–Proverbs 13:11

  11. Your reputation is worth more than your wealth.

A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.–Proverbs 22:1

  12. Stinginess leads to poverty. Pray and ask God to show you the motivations of your own heart towards money.

A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him.–Proverbs 28:22

  13. Put humility, fearing/loving the Lord, and righteousness before wealth and success.

Humility and the fear of the Lord bring great wealth and honor and life.–Proverbs 22:4

Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.–Proverbs 11:28

  14. True wealth comes out of wisdom and not riches.

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver!–Proverbs 16:16

  15. Good, honest labor is more fruitful than chasing pleasure.

He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment.–Proverbs 12:11

Prayer for Today

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for all the finances and possessions that You’ve blessed me with thus far. Whether the wealth is material, spiritual, or relational, I thank You for it all and commit it into Your hands. Today I want to lift up my finances to You, and recognize that it all belongs to You, Father. Please teach me how to be obedient to Your voice, to be a better steward of my money and to give generously. May all the glory, honor, and blessing be unto You! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
