1. Schedule a time for your daily Bible reading

The truth is we all have the same 1,440 minutes in a day, and whether or not reading the Bible makes it in is completely up to you. As my favorite seminary professor said, “When your heart is willing, there are a million ways. When the heart is unwilling, there are a million excuses.” Now that you are dedicated to it, the rest is scheduling. Look at your calendar, avoid the busiest times, and commit to at least 15 minutes a day. Block out that time and it will be easier to stick with it.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and left the house… where he prayed.”

–Mark 1:35

2. Pick a place for your daily Bible reading

Finding the right place is key to success. If try to spend quality time reading the Bible lying down in bed with your favorite comforter wrapped around you, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment (and a good, long nap).Consider the following: Where am I least likely to get distracted? Is this a quiet place? Are there a lot of people around? Find the right place for you and discover how much more success you’ll have in you Bible reading plan.

“And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.”

–Luke 5:16

3. Pick an accountability partner

Tell a church leader, a Christian friend or family member that you’re trying to make daily devotionals a long-term habit. Let them know you want to be asked if you’re keeping your appointments with God’s Word, and you’ll notice it’s a lot easier to say, “Yes.” Let them know about our 30-Day Bible Challenge and invite them to join!

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

–Proverbs 27:17

4. Reward yourself

Of course, you’re already being rewarded by taking in God’s Word, but extra incentives may help on those days you just don’t feel like doing your daily Bible reading (and we all have those days). You can treat yourself to a favorite dessert, an episode of your favorite television show, or a new book when you finish a week of daily Bible readings.

“…He rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

–Hebrews 11:6

5. Don’t skip a day

If you find that you’re tempted to give yourself permission to skip a day, realize that reading even a small portion of the day’s Bible reading is helpful. So if your day is packed and you can’t set aside a full 15-minutes, try 10 minutes. If you can’t set aside 10 minutes, try 5 minutes. Research shows it takes about 21 days to form a new habit and setting aside even a small amount of time will help you get used to daily meeting with God. So be consistent and try not to skip a day.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day…”

–1 Timothy 4:7-8
