EVERY Thing in Prayer & Supplication

1pet

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

This popular verse in Philippians promises the peace of God; the scripture does not say “the peace of God might just keep your hearts and minds” or “if you’re lucky, your hearts and minds will be kept in the peace of God.” It says “the peace of God… SHALL keep your hearts and minds.”
There is a condition that we lift everything up to the Lord, however. “Every thing.” Paul writes to “be careful for nothing,” most likely suggesting that we should leave nothing out of our prayers and supplications to the Lord. That promotion you want at work. Your son’s college finals. The casserole you have planned for dinner. That estranged friend that’s been on your heart. Or maybe the recent loss of a loved one. And that’s just the prayers! Paul begs us to turn to thanksgiving! The roof over your head, the air you breathe, the children you’ve been given, the friends and community around you, what finances you have to give and get by. It’s all a blessing from the Lord.
Take a moment today to make a list of things you are thankful for, but don’t forget to also make your requests known: your Heavenly Father is kind–no good thing does he withhold from us. He simply asks that we ask, seek, and believe.
If you don’t feel the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep pressing into scripture. Keep making your supplications and thanksgivings known, especially when it’s hard. It’s by faith and grace that we’ll receive this peace. Before you know it, the process of digging into the Word and conversing in prayer with the Holy Spirit will help you renew your mind (Rom 12:2).
